Modi and building of a Welfare State.

On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, Narendra Modi launched the Urban Swacha Bharat Mission and also reviewed the Jal Jeevan mission. (connecting rural areas with Tap water). This triggered the idea of this article. Watching him on YouTube, which took me to some of his older interviews, he was asked about the importance of Bapu's thoughts in todays world. As a CM he said he would like to build a true welfare state on the ideals of Bapu's Ram Rajya. Words can sometimes mean nothing until they are backed by actions. Hence now 7years on and a global pandemic later, it is a nice time to review Modis work as PM, and has he stood on his words of building a welfare state. For the purpose this article, we will try to focus on the economic aspects.  Welfare State is different form Socialists State: Welfare state IMO is very different from a Socialists /Communist's State. The Socialists state chases a Miraj of equality for all in all fields, a high sounding ideal but an impractical goa...

Justice Delayed is Justice denied.

Image
“The Rule of Law and maintenance of order is the science of governance” - Kautilya’s Arthashastra, 4th century B.C. While Justice delayed is justice denied is a legal maxim of the common law, which traces its origin in the west, as we can see from the above quote, that the principles of justice were laid out in the ancient Indian tradition of governance as well! While the scope of the maxim is very wide and can be argued from various standpoints, for the purpose of this essay we will focus on the social and economic impact of justice delayed and its consequences on the society from the stand point of India. Data on the pendency of cases in India: As of March 2021, 4.06cr. Cases are pending in all the courts put together, out of which 3.51cr or 86% of the total cases are pending with the lower courts, 57lcs cases or 14% or pending with the high court and remaining 66 thousand with the apex court. Decoding 6yrs of Narendra Modi's political economy.

With the slowdown in the domestic economy and the technical recession that has been caused by COVID 19 induced lockdown in the Q1 of 2020 a lot of ‘economists’ have been writing obituaries for the Indian Economy. The Stock market fell about 30% in April and then everybody was projecting the doomsday scenarios and were like ‘look I told ya’ they don’t understand economics. The same guys have now changed their positions as markets traded at all-time high just 8 month after pandemic. Also in a democracy were mandate of the people is considered the barometer, Modi led BJP has not just retained power in 2019 but has also been making gains in the majority states. So what’s the myth and what is the reality. This piece is not about the narrow data point to argue one way or the other but just too simply lay what the trajectory of reform initiated by the Modi government is. The 1 st tenure: Modi with his 282 was thought of continuing on the ABV path, and initiated with the land reform bill wh...

Ram Janma bhoomi and the larger truth

The Bhoomi Pujan of Ram Mandir is an historic event for a civilizational country like India. It is a signal that India is willing to re-assert its civilizational ties with Bharat and is also willing to fight long battles at many fronts, legal, propaganda wars and also on the streets. This has not been an easy victory and because of the sensitive nature of the topic, often only the so called ‘rationalists’ have chosen to speak on the topic openly often without having read a word about it or at best quoting from the ‘Secular’ myths peddled by some media houses, hampering truth in the process. The Bhumi Pujan is an apt time to talk about this long battle and lay to the fore, the historical narratives around the case in particular but also to show how the civilization has survived the massive onslaught from the invaders and also their ‘fanatic religious zeal’ to destroy the faith of the non-righteous ‘idol worshipers’ and to establish what they called as the only true faith.  Some glob...

Contribution of Veer Savarkar to India's revolutionary freedom movement.

We often talk about butterfly effects which means a small event somewhere having a deep and profound effect on something very far away. The same can be said about the alternative struggle for India's freedom. In 1897 Pune was hit by a epidemic (plague) and the British government in Maharashtra was committing atrocities under the garb of controlling the epidemic. Enraged by the horrors of the government and its failures two young men the Chaphekar brothers killed the commanding officer of Pune, Mr Rand, subsequent to which they were hanged. Little could have anyone known that this event could inspire one of the pioneers of the Indian revolutionary movement. The boy merely 14 was so moved by this event that he rushed to the temple of 'Astha Bhuja Bhavani' in his house and took the oath 'Shartu la marata marata mare to zunzen' ...(will fight and kill the enemy till I survive or die in the process). This oath the boy took at 14 would remain his guiding thought through o...

We are celebrating Maharashtra day today, the state we know geographically came into existence today in 1960 but the history and the legacy of maharashtra is not just geographic it's contributions to the various aspects of this nation and it's culture are profound. A  brief take on them today It's links to Ramayana : Rama is said to have spent some time of his vanavas in Panchavati (today's Nashik) so it has had the honour to host most revered of the hindu gods.... The bhakti movement : The period of 11th to 16th century saw a great intellectual and philosophical churn in india leading to the rise of many saints across India. Maharashtra had its golden period during which saints from all societal background preached here starting from Dnyaneshwar , Chokha Mela , Namdev, Tukaram , Savta mali, Ramdas , Mukta bai and Jana bai to name a few who contributed not just to Maharashtra's intellectual corpus but helped re imagine Sanatan Dharma. Namdev's contribution ...

CAA protest and its resemblance with the partition arguments.

The current protest against CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) and in making the struggles unequivocally as the struggles for the Muslims in India when the Law does not in any way affect them, have raised the concerns in some sections of the society. The argument used by people is that CAA is discriminatory against a particular religion that is Islam and Muslims. While by now everyone is aware of what CAA means, it is important to reiterate that CAA is applicable to the people of only three specific countries that is Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. The people protesting are doing a hue and cry why the Muslims are excluded especially the Shia’s and Ahemedia’s which face discrimination in Pakistan. The template being used is that of saving the constitution and thus Dr. Ambedkar is being invoked by the protesters frequently.   Then why does it become justifiable for the Indian Secular state to not grant a fast track process for the Muslims of Pakistan or Bangladesh, remember they ...
